🎟️ An Insider Take on Beating Bots
It’s a sad reality, but fans now have to compete against bots (automated software programs that can move through queues and checkouts faster than humans) every time tickets go on sale. And it’s not just big scalpers anymore. Everyday people, companies, and even high schoolers are running bots to grab blocks of tickets, which makes understanding these tactics more important than ever. I came across an interesting reddit AMA from someone who actually builds and sells ticket bots, and his perspective is worth a look.
Here’s the full rundown of his advice for normal fans trying to compete:
🛒 How to Beat Bots
Camping (getting in the online queue as early as possible before the onsale starts).
Be signed in to your ticketing account early, complete any captcha or two-factor authentication ahead of time, and make sure your credit card info is already saved in your profile.
Use presale codes, verified fan codes, or member locked ID codes (common in sports).
Credit cards process faster than debit cards.
Don’t give up too soon, tickets often get re-released in waves for 10 to 15 minutes as bot checkouts fail. Stay on the ticket map and be ready to select seats as they reappear.
Use multiple devices/accounts with different browsers so they each get their own queue number
Beware: if you log into the same queue on the same browser or same account on a different device sites may kick you back to the end of the line on the new login.
Ethernet is faster than Wi-Fi.
The “queue” doesn’t really start at #1. There are usually hundreds already browsing tickets.

⚖️ FTC Sues Ticketmaster & Live Nation
This week, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), joined by attorneys general from seven states, has filed a major lawsuit against Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation. Regulators claim the companies have:
Enabled bulk buying by brokers: Ticketmaster allegedly let professional resellers bypass purchase limits artists set (like “4 tickets per fan”). That allowed brokers to scoop up hundreds of seats before the public could.
Profited from resale markups: Instead of cracking down, Ticketmaster collected fees on both the original sale and the resale of those tickets—making money twice on the same seat.
Failed to enforce policies meant to protect fans: The company’s own rules prohibit bulk buying, but according to the FTC, enforcement was weak or nonexistent.
Pocketed massive fees: From 2019–2024, Ticketmaster is accused of reaping billions in resale fees and overseeing tens of billions in total ticket sales, including mandatory service charges.
Why It Matters for Fans
More tickets at face value → If courts force stricter enforcement, regular buyers may finally have a fairer shot before brokers clean house.
Less resale gouging → With fewer tickets funneled straight to resale, there’s a chance scalpers won’t dominate the market.
System-wide transparency → The lawsuit is also a warning shot to the entire ticketing industry: business-as-usual may no longer fly.
Pressure for reform → Even before any judgment, competitors and lawmakers could act, leading to clearer pricing and tougher anti-broker rules.
This is the most serious federal action against Ticketmaster since the Pearl Jam era of the ’90s — and it could reshape how tickets are bought and sold in the U.S.
