📰 Industry Watch
Insomniac Buys Avalon Theatre

On Sept 25, 2025, Insomniac Entertainment acquired the historic Avalon Theatre in Hollywood from Ligny LLC for $15.7 million. Built in 1927, Avalon has been one of LA’s cornerstone venues for electronic music and live entertainment, hosting everyone from Tiësto to The Rolling Stones. The purchase means Insomniac not only controls programming but also the real estate, securing a prime piece of Hollywood nightlife real estate for the long term.
This acquisition reflects a broader consolidation trend in the nightlife industry. Insomniac already owns or controls venues like NOVA SD in San Diego and Exchange LA in DTLA, and they’ve deepened their presence through festival expansions like Day Trip and Beyond Wonderland. With Avalon now under its umbrella, Insomniac further cements its dominance in Southern California’s club and festival circuit, making it harder for independent promoters to compete on both price and scale. For artists, this could mean more standardized booking processes but also reduced competition in venue options.
AI Music Licensing on the Horizon

According to the Financial Times (Sept 30, 2025), record labels are on the verge of finalizing landmark AI music licensing deals that could be announced in the coming weeks. These agreements would allow AI developers (such as OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and others) to license major-label catalogs for model training, similar to how streaming platforms negotiate rights. The idea is to create a revenue pipeline where labels and artists are compensated when their recordings are used in AI-generated outputs, addressing one of the biggest controversies in the music-tech space.
If completed, these deals could reshape how the industry views AI: moving from a “copyright threat” to a new licensing frontier. For artists, the concern will be whether revenue is distributed fairly and transparently, or if labels take the lion’s share as they did in early streaming contracts. For tech companies, securing licensing could unlock safer public rollouts of AI music tools, avoiding lawsuits while accelerating innovation. Expect ripple effects across publishing rights, sync licensing, and even fan-created content — as AI becomes not just a disruptor but a licensed partner in the music economy.
